Tunng – Good Arrows

To an extent, the initial two releases — Mother’s Daughter and Other Songs and Comments of the Inner Chorus — under the name of Tunng have resonated more as a vehicle for Mike Lindsay and Sam Genders to tinker with eclectic mutations of the folk sound, but with the addition of four to their number — Ashley Bates, Becky Jacobs, Martin Smith and Phil Winter — Tunng’s third release Good Arrows is the party in which the folktronica has finally come into its own, though it is hardly a feel good album: By juxtaposing some sinister lyric stylings with a lazy afternoon pop sensibility, Lindsay’s rich instrumentation lulls listeners into a relaxing calm all while Genders and Jacobs whisper bittersweet morbidity behind their ears and the result is a sheer delight of a record.
