Son Volt - American Central Dust

Son Volt is popularly labeled as “alt country,” but their latest album American Central Dust is a whole lot of country and not a lot of alt; it’s extremely melancholy and is a bit of a chore to get through in one listen – the songs are tense and emotion-filled but the music is sparse and the record as a whole comes off as droning and, quite frankly, boring.

this reviewer is obviously a victim of the mtv generation.this album requires more than one listen, Jay Farrars genius as a song writer lies in his ability to capture the emotion of the situation which he writes about, you can almost smell the dust and rust of the decaying rural America he writes about in his songs and feel the quiet Hope amid the desperation of his characters. Definitely one of the great American songwriters!

Needs more than one listen. Many new classics here.
