Reefer – Reefer

November 17th, 2008 Posted in Album reviews

Nick Thorburn of Islands and The Unicorns teams with hip-hop producer Daddy Kev to make a concept album about Hawaii and the results are about what you’d expect – Thorburn’s airy voice crooning beat-driven pop songs covered in ukulele, steel guitar, and all manner of watery nature sounds, to fairly entertaining effect.

Why so blue?: Reefer‘s cover of “Blue Moon” is perhaps the album’s best moment. Deeply beautiful, the cover has a sense of sincerity and emotion that seems a bit lacks elsewhere on the album.

Remix Round-up: The album features two remixes – one of “Hit and Run” courtesy of Dntl and the other of “Let It Go” by Flying Lotus. I prefer the latter, despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that it chops the song up into a nearly unrecognizable state.

Score: 3 / 5
