Eagles of Death Metal - Heart On

The Beavis and Butt-Head-esque title indicates otherwise, but Heart On is a little more mature and toned down than Death By Sexy – consequently, it’s not quite as fun and, while good, may prompt fears that they are morphing into the Eagles of Long Term Coma Metal.

Stone Gods – Silver Spoons & Broken Bones

October 24th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Album reviews

Rising from the ashes of The Darkness, Stone Gods feature none of the flair and glam of their previous incarnation, which was an important tool in covering for their lacking in talent; there are a few bearable straight up rock tracks, but the album sounds like a version of Mötley Crüe trying even more desperately to stay relevant than usual…The Darkness was a high energy coke band, while Stone Gods are little more than glue sniffers.

Jay-Z – The Blueprint

September 11, 2001
Roc-A-Fella/Island Def Jam
Rating: 4.6 / 5

The Music Rag One Sentence Review: Arguably Jigga’s masterpiece, he spits expertly only the way he can on then-beefs, girls (girls, girls), and a possible stint in prison, all without unnecessary skits and other frills and superbly soulful production from the likes of Timbaland, Just Blaze, and an at-the-time unknown Kanye West. Elvis Costello and The Imposters – Momofuku

April 22, 2008
Lost Highway
Rating: 4.2 / 5

The Music Rag One Sentence Review: Loose and unselfconscious, Elvis Costello’s newest album is a true return to form, a parade of addictively catchy hooks and brilliant songwriting, with just enough diversity to keep it from feeling boring or dated.

Jay Reatard – Matador Singles ’08

October 7, 2008
Matador
Rating: 4.1 / 5

The Music Rag One Sentence Review: This compilation of Jay Reatard singles is fast, dirty, and fun – a bit less hard punk and a bit more accessible pop than his other singles collection released earlier this year – and is, despite being far from original, undeniably addictive.

No Age – Nouns

May 8, 2008
Sub Pop
Rating: 3.4 / 5

The Music Rag One Sentence Review: Nouns contains quite a few pop gems, albeit buried beneath layers of droning guitars and hammering percussion – if your ears are up to the challenge, it’s a good listen, though it can get a bit samey at times.
