Dr. Dog – Fate

Dr. Dog is a band oft derided by critics and indie snobs for wearing their famous influences on their sleeves – The Beatles, The Beach Boys – but it would take the iciest of hearts or the most doggedly analytical of minds to prevent oneself from enjoying the songs on this album: the laid back, building opener (“The Breeze”), the flurrying piano of “The Old Days”, or the climactic and near-perfect finale, “My Friend”.

Women – Women

Listening to album highlights like “Black Rice”, it’s not hard to describe Women’s pounding, jangly, guitar pop sound as an enjoyable cross between the Velvet Underground and the hiss and fuzz of modern noise rock, though they could benefit from a little more of the former and a little less of the latter.

Gnarls Barkley – The Odd Couple

MGMT – Oracular Spectacular

If you read a lot of music news blogs you’ll know that MGMT are pretty much everywhere these days, but they’re not all hype: Oracular Spectacular is not mind-blowing but it’s got a lot of entertainment value, filled with shimmering and sparkling psychedellic funk songs that explore themes of childhood and stardom while touring new yet strangely familiar planes of pop influence.

Cansei de Ser Sexy – Donkey
